Come behind the scenes at ANSTO and see how nuclear-based science is helping to deliver benefits to all Australians

ANSTO is pleased to invite you to attend this special tour as a part of the 2018 ASC conference – places are limited so please register early

The ANSTO Lucas Heights campus employs over 500 scientists, engineers and technicians, answering significant questions relating to human health, the environment, nuclear fuel cycle and industry utilising nuclear techniques.

The tour will include a visit to some of Australia’s most critical scientific and medical infrastructure including the:

  • Open Pool Australian Light-water (OPAL) multi-purpose reactor, globally regarded as the most efficient reactor in the world;
  • Centre for Neutron Scattering, a suite of world-leading scientific instruments
  • Centre for Accelerator Science, one of the southern hemisphere’s largest environment research centres.
  • New Mo-99 Production Facility, which is dramatically increasing ANSTO’s production capacity of the most important nuclear medicine.

Along the way, we will share insights into the challenges and learnings of communicating the benefits of the misunderstood world of nuclear.

MUST BE WEARING ENCLOSED SHOES (that cover the whole foot) AND TROUSERS/PANTS

Travel Methods
1) Meet at Central Train Station (Platform 25) at 8:40am to catch train to Sutherland Station (ANSTO will pick up and drop off the group at Sutherland Train Station)
2) Drive to ANSTO Discovery Centre – meet at 9:50am.

Visuals grab attention and can have great explanatory power. As a result they’ve long been coveted in science communication circles. Yet many practitioners still feel they lack the skills to make them.

Well, forget all that negative self talk. The premise of this workshop is in the title: “Anyone can visually communicate science”. And it goes about equipping you to do so through a series of brief lectures, discussions and practical exercises.

Building on everyday skills you already possess (like writing, taking photos, sending text messages and using presentation software), this hands-on workshop will help you make visuals that should prove immediately useful in your internal and external communication activities.

Bring along pen, paper, laptop and ideally some idea/concept/research you wish to communicate visually.

Learn how to:
⁃ analyse visuals you like and use them to guide you in creating your own,
⁃ generate and iterate visual ideas,
⁃ create simple illustrations, visual abstracts and infographics,
⁃ improve the quality of your visual products,
⁃ and commission visuals (because even having learnt the basics you may still need to delegate).

PLEASE NOTE: Science visualisation is a related but different area of endeavour. If that is your focus, much of the content might still be relevant but the workshop will not be covering computer simulation or 3d computer graphics.

Using lots of hands-on exercises we explore the power of podcasting. What is podcasting? Why is the spoken word so effective? Who can podcast? (clue – anyone!)
We look at genres and formats, planning your podcast, working with talent, the art of the interview, scripting/presenting, how to handle audio equipment, and an understanding of the ‘back end’ – editing choices, hosting and social media.

Format
This session will alternate instruction in the elements of podcasting you need to consider and a number of practical exercises to help you come away with a plan for your first (second or third) ideal podcast.
