Ecologist and Science Communicator, Bamford Consulting Ecologists

Mandy Bamford grew up near the Swan River in Perth, watching the creatures that spilled over into the suburbs from urban swamps and bushland. As a child, family camping trips fuelled Mandy’s passion for nature. At 14 years of age, she became a volunteer in the first Atlas of Australian Birds project and as a university student, helped coordinate promotion of the published Atlas. Mandy studied ducks for her Honours degree in Zoology while moonlighting at the community radio station at the University of Western Australia. Her first graduate position was as project officer for Herdsman Lake Wildlife Centre in suburban Perth. Since then, she has worked as an ecologist and environmental communicator on projects ranging from research on the use of nest boxes in urban reserves to arts projects like Perth Festival 2019’s Boorna Waanginy The Trees Speak in Kings Park. Mandy loves to share her excitement about nature, urban wildlife and especially birds. She is a Director of Birdlife Australia, chairs the Herdsman Lake Regional Park community advisory committee and is on the Council of the WA Naturalists’ Club and WA Gould League. Mandy is an occasional guest ecologist on the ABC in Perth, often in combination with her husband, fellow ecologist Mike Bamford.
