Tim Moss

Associate Professor and Perinatal Physiologist, Hudson Institute of Medical Research

Associate Professor Tim Moss is a perinatal physiologist (he studies how babies’ bodies function before and soon after birth) from the Ritchie Centre at the Hudson Institute of Medical Research and the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology at Monash University.
From the very beginning of his research career, Tim has been frustrated by unnecessarily complicated writing, confusing PowerPoint presentations and unclear presentation of data. Rather than succumb to conventional academic styles, Tim looked for ways to develop his communication skills and to find effective ways to teach these skills to others. This led him to train at the Alan Alda Centre for Communicating Science at Stoney Brook University, the Communication Lab at the MIT School of Engineering, and to spend time in the crikey.com newsroom.
Tim also defies convention when it comes to the ways he does research. He was recently inspired by the family of a child with cerebral palsy to help them run a research study to investigate the efficacy of intensive physical therapy. Tim used his skills to engage with families of children with cerebral palsy, therapists, philanthropists, academics, politicians and government organisations to help raise awareness of thel therapy and convince the National Disability Insurance Scheme to fund it.
